Rokeby Museum is a National Historic Landmark that connects visitors with the human experience of the underground railroad and with the Robinson family, who lived on and farmed this land for nearly 200 years. Its exhibit, “Free & Safe: The Underground Railroad in Vermont,” tells a more accurate and nuanced story focused on two escaped slaves, Simon and Jesse, whose stories are documented in family letters. Rowland and Rachel Robinson were radical abolitionists who devoted decades to antislavery and continued to agitate for full rights for African Americans after emancipation. Museum programs explore how this history remains relevant today.
