National Museums Liverpool (NML) is a group of eight museums and galleries, sharing important stories from ancient times to today through collections consisting of four million objects of global importance. Our venues are Lady Lever Art Gallery, Walker Art Gallery, Sudley House, World Museum, International Slavery Museum, Maritime Museum, Seized, and the Museum of Liverpool, which, combined, welcomed more than three million visitors in 2019/20.

National Museums Liverpool is undertaking a decade of change within the city and further afield. Liverpool’s iconic waterfront is changing, and as part of National Museums Liverpool’s (NML) 10-year masterplan, this landmark project will be transforming the area between the Royal Albert Dock and Mann Island, as well as revitalizing all waterfront facilities. We want to re-engage local communities and empower individuals to bring this significant and important part of the waterfront to life. The Canning Dock, which is the public realm, will look at delivering a space for education, play and identity where people from all walks of life will feel welcome, respected, and included. Asif Khan, Sir David Adjaye, Mariam Kamara and Theaster Gates have been appointed to take forward this part of the project. There are four parts which include 1) Public realm, including a public art strategy 2) beautiful new bridges 3) The two dry docks reimagined into a ‘Heritage Dock’ and ‘Experience Dock’ and 4) the potential of a new building, with the unique offer of access to the water.
